How to Unclog a Shower Drain

When you need to know how to unclog a shower drain or a bathtub drain, we are here for you. At Cathedral Plumbing, we would be happy to come out and do the unclogging or drain cleaning for you. If you want to tackle the project yourself, however, here are a few things you can try. But remember: never do anything you’re not entirely comfortable with!

Clogged Shower Drain? Try These!

Use Your Hand

Sometimes, you can reach down your drain and grab a hair clog to pull it out. We recommend wearing gloves when you do this because the insides of your drains can get pretty nasty! If you can’t quite get to the clog but you think you’re close, a simple unclogging tool or even a screwdriver can help you unclog your shower drain.

Try Home Remedies

If the clog is too deep to grab, try dissolving it with some common household substances. You can pour hot water down your clogged shower drain or you can put a cup of baking soda down it, followed by a cup of vinegar. Let it sit for a few minutes, then follow it with as much hot water as you can get down there. Sometimes, this can unclog a bathtub drain fast.

Get Your Plunger

Plungers don’t just work on the toilet…they work on all drains. Make sure you get a good seal around the clogged drain, then plunge away. It may take a few minutes to move the clog enough to either dislodge it or allow you to pull it out. Pretty soon, you won’t have to worry about your bathtub drain being clogged anymore.

Find Your Shop Vac

Set your vac for liquid vacuuming, then place the hose over the top of the drain and turn it on. It may produce enough suction to bring up the clog or move it around so that it gets into a position where it can flow down the drain when you run the water.

Wield a Plumbing Snake

You can rent a plumbing snake from your local hardware store and try to get the clog out with that. Unless you’ve used these before, though, you may want to avoid them. They can get stuck in the drain and cause even more damage.
